'I was under spell when I killed my lover'

Date: 2016-06-02

Thirty-six-year-old David Ogundele, who allegedly killed his lover, Miss Tosin Ashinwo, 27, has said he was under a spell when he killed Ashinwo and stabbed her 65-year-old mother, Abiola.

Speaking while being paraded along with other suspects by the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Samuel Okaula, in Ilorin on Wednesday, the suspect said he had been married to his wife, Ronke, for about seven years without a child.

Ogundele, who is a worker with Landmark University Secondary School, Omu-Aran, Kwara State, added that Ronke, on hearing of his relationship with Ashinwo, threatened to deal with him.

He said, "I have been married for about seven years without any child from my wife, Ronke. After people saw me with Ashinwo, they told my wife stories that were false. That made her (Ronke) to get annoyed and she threatened to deal with me. It was after I stabbed Ashinwo and I saw her collapsing that my eyes became clear.

"We were very close. We met last year November and things had been going on fine with us. I do not know what made me to kill her. We were friends. She loved me and I loved her as well. I don't know what came over me."

The CP said on April 25 at about 8am, Ogundele allegedly murdered Oshinwo, who was a worker with MTN. He said the suspect claimed that she refused his marriage proposal and went further to stab her mother.

The CP stated that the command in its determination to arrest the culprit, set up an intelligence-based unit which arrested him on May 13 at Oba-Ile in Osun State. He also paraded an alleged notorious gang leader, Olatunji Ibrahim aka Ariyo.

The Kwara State Police Command had in 2015 declared Ibrahim wanted and offered a reward of N50m to any person with useful information that could lead to his arrest. Okaula said Ibrahim had in 2015 led members of his gang to unleash terror on Agbarere, Ita-Ajia, Idi-Ape, and other areas in Ilorin by allegedly killing residents and setting hundreds of houses ablaze.

He added that the gang also damaged 50 vehicles after which Ibrahim escaped and went underground. "The determination and the doggedness of the command and the need to make him answer for all his criminal activities led to the setting up of a special investigation team with a sole mandate of apprehending him.

"The effort paid off as Ibrahim and other members of his gang: Lukman Oladimeji, aka Zanda, and Akeem Olayinka, aka Student, were eventually traced to their hide out," the CP said. He also said the command arrested Moe Anjorin, 34, for alleged involvement in rape, robbery and unlawful possession of arms.

He stated that the police recovered three locally-made pistols, one axe, eight live ammunition, one live cartridge, charms and a knife from the suspect. Okaula said the command on May 29 arrested seven suspected cultists at the Oka-Onigbin and Oko areas of the state.

He stated that three of the suspects had confessed to being strong members of the KKK Confraternity, adding that their activities included maiming and robbing in Oke-Onigbin and its environs.

He added that an axe, cutlasses and charms were recovered as exhibits from the suspects. The CP said the suspects would soon be charged to court.
