Scholar wants African students enlightened on roles as change agents
Dean of Students Affairs, Kenyatta University Kenya, Dr. Edwin Gimode has stressed the need to educate African youths on their role to liberate and transform the continent into what others will reckon with. He disclosed this during the visit of the university's Students' Union executives to the University of Ilorin, recently. He stressed that the future of Africa lies on the shoulder of the youths and implore them to be good ambassadors of the continent.
The Kenyatta University don, who is also a Historian however expressed his happiness on his first visit to Nigeria to see physically what he has read about the country in history books and journals. During the interactive session to formally welcome their visitors the University of Ilorin, Dean of Student Affairs Prof. Talabi expressed his profound happiness to see the Kenyatta University representatives on the campus and wished them a peaceful stay.
President, University of Ilorin Students' Union Alao Ibrahim, used the opportunity to educate their visitors on the how the Students' Union is run in the country. He also intimated them of the Students' Union activities, giant strides and programmes. Also speaking at the programme, KUSA president, Mr. Sam Mukua said the union in his institution is made up of two arms of government; the Kenyatta University Students' Association (KUSA), which is the governing body and the Congress that comprises of the general students' populace. He further highlighted the programmes initiated by the university.
The UNILORIN Students' Union president in his concluding remarks indulged their counterparts from Kenya to incorporate the e-voting system during their Students' Union elections as it is the practice in the university. While his counterpart from Kenyatta University in his own final remarks advised the UNILORIN Students' Union to introduce a Certificate Course in Leadership, that will be taken by all students during their final year, as it's the norm over there in their institution.
