15 LGs in Kwara owe over six months salaries - NULGE
The National Union of Local Government Employees on Wednesday said 15 out of the 16 local government councils in Kwara State are owing their workers six months salary.
Afolabi Abayomi, the state NULGE Secretary, said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in llorin that only Kaima Local Government Area was up-to-date in salary payment.
The NULGE scribe lamented that the conditions of workers in the remaining 15 councils was not palatable.
Abayomi said: "The situation is moving from bad to worse because some area councils still owe from September. "Some of the workers badly affected by unpaid salaries are husband and wife working in the same local councils."
Abayomi said that the workers in all the 16 local councils are currently undergoing bio-metric data capturing exercise aimed at fishing out ghost workers among them.
He said the councils' chairmen have pledged to settle all arrears of salaries at the end of the verification exercise.
The NULGE secretary advised the workers to be patient and carry out their duties diligently to allow the councils chairmen pay the arrears. NAN recalls that local government workers in the state had in January embarked on an indefinite strike action over unpaid salaries.
It took the intervention of traditional rulers in the state, led by the Emir of llorin, Alhaji lbrahim Sulu-Gambari, before the strike was suspended. NAN.
