Unilorin VC seeks regular interaction among African youths
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, has called on African leaders to create platform for regular interaction among African youths.
Ambali made the call on Monday in Ilorin while receiving members of the Executive Council of the Kenyatta University Students Association (KUSA) who visited him in his office.
The students, led by the university's Director of Student Affairs, Dr Edwin Gimode, were in Ilorin on a four-day visit to understudy student union activities in the institution.
"Africans are known to be one another's keeper. Taking care of one another is a heritage we have that is being envied and should not be lost,'' Ambali said. The vice chancellor told the Kenyan visitors that the university has a robust students' union body allowed to operate freely with little supervision. He added that the university's management encouraged the body to not only exercise its freedom but also develop ideas and plans that would make them good leaders in the future.
"The University of Ilorin has consistent academic calendar devoid of students' unrest because we dialogue with them," he said, adding that elections into the union was always transparent and conducted electronically.
The vice chancellor described the students' union leadership as a very crucial segment of the university community, stressing that the management had taken measures to shield them from negative external influences. Ambali disclosed that Kenyatta University has existing agreements with the University of Ilorin in various fields.
Earlier in his remarks, the Director of Students Affairs at the Kenyatta University, Dr Edwin Gimode expressed delight for the reception accorded the team since their arrival. He commended Ambali for his commitment to the agreement between the two institutions.(NAN)
