Workshop In Ilorin: Youth Unemployment Responsible For Growing Insecurity

Date: 2012-06-07

Stakeholders at a workshop in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, have attributed growing insecurity in the country to youth unemployment.

The stakeholders therefore urged governments at all levels to step up their job creation drives to stem the level of insecurity in the country arising from youth unemployment.

They also frowned at the recommendation of the Steve Oronsanye committee which called for the rationalisation of the Federal Character Commission (FCC).

They opined that FCC is indispensible for the peace, unity and stability of Nigeria.

In a communiqué at the end of a-three day workshop, signed by FCC Executive Chairman, Professor Shuaib O. AbdulRaheem and Professor Gbenda Batur-Laha, the stakeholders added that "under a democratic dispensation, it is the view of the workshop that the efficiency and effectiveness of the FCC would be impeded due to political interference and, therefore, calls on the federal government to insulate the commission from partisan politics."

The workshop was entitled "Fulfilling a Constitutional Mandate in the Implementation of the Federal Character Principle and Guidelines at the Three Tiers of Government."

Parts of the communiqué read: "The workshop notes and agrees that the basis of peace and unity in all federal system of government is the practice of equity and fairness and calls on governments at all levels and employers of labour in Nigeria to ensure equity and fairness in making political and public service appointments as well as the provision of socio-economic amenities and infrastructural facilities so as to give every citizen a sense of belonging."
