EFCC's Invitation of Mrs. Saraki, Curious, House Members Allege

Date: 2015-07-26

Twenty-five lawmakers in the House of Representatives have described the invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the wife of Senate President Bukola Saraki, Mrs. Toyin Saraki, as curious, expressing concern that the leadership of the National Assembly is being targeted for harassment using state institutions.

In a statement signed on behalf of the lawmakers by Hon. Umar Buba Jibril and Hon. Muhammad Kabiru Ajanah, they raised allegations that certain power blocks are determined to pursue all means to mount pressure on the Senate President who left office as Governor of Kwara state over four years ago.

The lawmakers noted that not once, while Saraki was Governor for eight years, and in the four years that he has left office, was any mention made of Toyin Saraki being involved in anything untoward.

"We will continue to encourage the EFCC to carry out its legal duties. Indeed we commend the recent improvement in the Commission's performance. However, we hope and trust that the EFCC, being a highly professional organisation, will not lend itself as a tool to propagate the political agenda of any person or group," the statement read.

"We believe that the era of using EFCC to harass political office holders ended with the last administration. We must never return to that dark and dangerous side in our polity. The nation wants a genuine war against corruption. At a time when the President has identified places like the NNPC as a significant source of corruption, to ignore that and try and rake up mud against the wife of a public officer would be most unfortunate," it added.
