Bukola Saraki vs Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq: Tribunal begins hearing on petition today
The Kwara State Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Ilorin, l would, today, commence hearing in a case challenging the election of Senator Bukola Saraki as Senator representing the Central Senatorial district.
Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is challenging the victory of Saraki of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The PDP candidate asked the three-man tribunal chaired by Justice J.J. Majebi to declare him the winner of the March 28 Kwara Central Senatorial election, claiming to have won the majority votes cast during the election. It would be recalled that Saraki was declared winner with 83, 639 against AbdulRasaq's over 40, 000 votes.
Dissatisfied with the result, the PDP candidate approached the tribunal, arguing that Saraki did not win the election and, therefore, he should be pronounced the winner.
Saraki's case was among the four cases emanating from the March 28 National Assembly elections.
Other elections being challenged by PDP at the tribunal were Kwara South and two House of Representatives seats for Ifelodun/Offa/Oyun and Ekiti/Irepodun/Isin/Oke Ero federal constituencies while another panel was attending to the governorship election petition.
In the case of Ekiti/Irepodun/Isin/Oke Ero where Princess Funke Adedoyin was declared the winner, the PDP candidate, Richard Babatunde asked the court to nullify the victory and declare him winner of the election having won the majority ballot.
It was learnt that hearing in the case ought to begin Monday but the tribunal adjourned to July 2, following an application by INEC and its electoral officers, asking the tribunal to set aside the subpoena to prevent the petitioner from bringing any witness.
Already, INEC officials have stormed the tribunal with materials used for the election but the materials were returned, following the fresh development. The application would be decided tomorrow.
