Speaker of Kwara State House of Assembly Dr. Ali Ahmad yesterday called for the strengthening of legislatures across the country, saying that they should not be regarded as another ministry under the executive arm of government.

Ahmad also decried what he called under-reporting of activities of state legislatures in the media, lamenting that most state Houses of Assembly are only in the news when there is crisis.

He spoke while receiving some staff of Media Trust Limited, publishers of the Daily Trust titles, led by the General Manager, Southern Operations, Mr. Ademola Oladosu.

Ahmad sought the support of Daily Trust newspapers in projecting activities of the House, saying that the state Assembly would take on serious issues requiring media attention.

Earlier, the general manager congratulated the speaker on his election as well as the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki as president of Senate. He said that Daily Trust was the only national newspaper printing simultaneously in four locations of Abuja, Kano, Maiduguri and Lagos.

He said the Lagos press was opened this year to serve the South-west states, including Ilorin, and ensure that the paper gets to the newsstands early.
