PDP’ll crush all alliances by opposition - Baraje
Former acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Abubakar Baraje, has said the party will demolish "all alliances and attempts" by the opposition to defeat the PDP in future elections in the country.
Baraje, who spoke in Ilorin, Kwara State, during a special prayer organised for him by the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Zulu-Gambari, said, "It is not new. We are all living witnesses to the kind of gang-up that came up in 2011 when we were preparing for the 2011 general election, it is not different.
"The gang-up came up in 2003; the PDP demolished the gang-up. It came up in 2007, it was demolished and in 2011, they were demolished.
"So, even if they are preparing for 2015, it is going to be a fruitless effort. The gang-up is nothing as far as PDP is concerned. It is only giving PDP further strength."
The chairman spoke even as indications emerged over the weekend that the party was set to meet governors elected on its platform to discuss local government elections.
The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh, stated this in an interview with reporters in Abuja on Sunday.
Metuh, however, did not give details as to when and where the meeting would hold.
He nevertheless submitted that the PDP believed that, as the third tier of government, local government areas must be managed by democratically-elected officials.
He added that PDP leaders would expect the affected governors to give reasons why council polls had not held in their states.
He said, "It is constitutionally stated that the local government as a tier of governments must be administered by duly elected officials, not appointed caretaker chairmen.
"The party will meet with some of the governors of the states that are governed by PDP to ascertain why they have been unable to conduct local government elections. It is after this that we will know why they cannot conduct the elections and see how the party can assist them."
The House of Representatives recently moved a motion calling on the governors of about 25 states where caretaker committees are presently running the affairs of the their councils to urgently conduct the polls.
Meanwhile, the PDP has written a letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission on its observation that congresses in about 10 states were flawed.
Before now, INEC had written three separate letters to the PDP, insisting that the congresses in states like Yobe, Taraba, Sokoto, Adamawa, Nasarawa, Plateau, Lagos, Jigawa, Katsina and Anambra were not conducted according to the constitutional provisions of the party.
One of the letters signed by INEC’s secretary, Alhaji Abdullahi Kagama, reads, "The commission wishes to put your party on notice that unless the congresses in the affected states are rescheduled and conducted in accordance with PDP constitution and guidelines, only statutory delegates from the nine states listed above would be able to participate in the PDP national convention scheduled to hold on March 24 2012."
The Commission went on to warn that it would have nothing to do with party officials that were said to have been elected from the affected states unless the flawed elections were remedied.
Metuh, however, said that the National Working Committee of the PDP had discussed the issue and had also written to INEC to acknowledge the receipt of its letter.
He said the party was already studying the reports of all the congresses considered to be flawed by the commission and would make its position known later.
The party, he said, believes that the commission was adopting the right position, adding that the party would make its findings known to the commission soon.
