Defection: Minister, Gbemi trade words

Date: 2015-04-14

Minister of National Planning, Dr. Abubakar Sulaiman, has accused Senator Gbemisola Saraki of dumping the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because she lost out in the PDP governorship primaries.

Sulaiman said he was not surprised that Gbemi dumped the PDP for All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking with newsmen in Ilorin, the minister who hails from the same ward as Saraki, said Kwarans would seek God's intervention on their future. Gbemi Saraki, who contested the governorship primary in the PDP dumped the party for the APC, a day before the March 28 elections.

The minister said: "Gbemisola has been a mole in the party; she was there to play a role and she has played that role and left. Gbemi contested the primary election and she lost. If she had won, would she have left? This is the message."

On her part, Gbemi said she was not surprised by the minister's accusation, saying "he is one of those reaping where they didn't sow". She advised him to concentrate on re-building his party instead of lamenting her defection.

"I think it is better for him and others them, rather than question why people left the party, to actually concentrate on why they are in the party and to do the best for their own party. I did what was best for Kwara and for Nigeria.

From the result of the last election, people wanted change," she said.
