Meeting in Ilorin: SSANU criticises government
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has expressed concern over what it termed the Federal Government's lackadaisical attitude towards the fight against corruption and inadequate power supply in the country.
SSANU expressed these concerns in a statement co-signed by Samson Ugwoke and NAD Aboribo, SSANU president and spokesperson respectively at the end of its quarterly meeting held in Ilorin, Kwara State.
"NEC-in-session observed with utter dismay the regularity with which scam of monumental proportions are taking place in Nigeria with impunity.
"This is in spite of the activities of EFCC and ICPC, which give the impression that the Government is at War Against Corruption. Nigerians and indeed the whole world are yet to see the casualties of this war, as little or nothing tangible has come out of the various scams uncovered by the National Assembly as exemplified in the Police Pensions Commission, Health Ministry, Security and Exchange Commission, Power Sector, Banking Sector, Oil Subsidy scams and others.
"This is a clear indication that the so-called Government War Against Corruption is ineffective and a window dressing. NEC therefore calls on the Federal Government to give a time-frame within which all corruption cases would be concluded in court; and in doing this, Government should avoid ‘Plea Bargaining’ which in itself is a scam.
"NEC hereby reiterates its earlier call on the Federal Government to set up special courts to handle cases of hybrid corruption, expeditiously. This is one of the ways government would regain the confidence of Nigerians."
On the just concluded investigation into the fuel subsidy regime, the union also called on Federal Government to ensure full implementation of the Farouk Lawan Adhoc committee and consider a downward review of all petroleum products especially petrol and kerosene.
"The fuel subsidy probe has opened the eyes of Nigerians to the truth, that is, how a few Nigerians otherwise known as ‘cabal’ impoverish Nigeria and Nigerians under the guise of fuel subsidy," the communique stated.
On the security challenges facing the country, the union expressed dismay over the massive killings of innocent citizens in the country, "which have now been extended to hitherto hallowed places of worship, media houses and educational institutions.
To this extent, the union called on "government at all levels to stop paying lip service to security of properties and lives of all Nigerians including that of the common man on the street.
"SSANU wants Government to make Security a top priory and to ensure that the Nigerian youths are meaningfully engaged in a way that will make violent activities unattractive to them.
"The master minds of these acts are gradually expanding their areas of operation from the Northern geo-political zones of the country towards the South.
"NEC urges the perpetrators of these heinous acts to toe the path of peace by sheathing their swords and engaging the Government in a round table dialogue.
"NEC also calls on the Federal Government to do all that is necessary including constructive engagement of the Boko Haram leaders, the Arewa Consultative Forum and the Royal fathers of the North, with a view to finding a lasting solution to the unwarranted carnage being visited on innocent Nigerians on daily basis."
While reacting to the poor electricity supply in the country, the union deplored a situation whereby electricity supply is at its lowest ebb, leading to a steady decline of Nigeria’s economy.
"Any economy that is generator-driven as it is happening in Nigeria today, encourages capital flight and makes nonsense of the import substitution strategy and the foreign investment drive of the present administration.
"NEC therefore calls on the Federal Government to pay the required attention to the energy sector and ensure adequate power supply. The Council also reiterates its earlier stand against upward review of electricity tariff in Nigeria more so in the face of the current abysmally low electricity supply."
