Presidency Intervenes in PDP Primaries in Kwara
The Presidency may have intervened in the pre and post crises of the Governorship primary elections of the Kwara state branch of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). 12 Governorship aspirants had vied for the sole ticket under rancourous atmosphere, leading to the botched attempt of the first exercises.
Among those jostling for the position are Dele Belgore SAN, Senators Makanjuola Ajadi, Simeon Ajibola, Gbemisola Saraki, Deacon John Dara, Jani Ibrahim, Professor Shuaib Oba AbdulRaheem, Hakeem Lawal, Sunday Babalola, and Bio Ibrahim.
A rescheduled exercise of the primary polls, conducted by Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswan, despite the initial hiccups, saw the emergence of Ajibola as the candidate.
Ajibola, a Christian from Isapa, in Irepodun Local Government Area (LGA) of the state, is at present Senator representing Kwara South Senatorial District. His present ticket at the Senate was his fourth consecutive ticket to the Upper Legislative Chamber.
Despite his political pedigree, some of the aspirants believed that Ajibola would not be the right candidate to oust the incumbent Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed in the much-awaited 2015 Governorship elections.
One unique characteristic with each of the aspirants before the successful primary election was a statement that the Presidency had allegedly "anointed me as the candidate." The development probably made it difficult for any consensus arrangement before the primaries.
But despite the post primary wrangling, sources told The Guardian in Ilorin that President Goodluck Jonathan had to summon all the contestants to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, where assurances were allegedly promised them but with a caveat.
"If you all go back to Kwara and work for the success of the PDP in the year 2015 elections."
The local Publicity Secretary of the party in Kwara Chief Rex Olawoye, told The Guardian of the return of harmony to the party, warning the incumbent of serious threats to his seat.
"With the unity radiating now in Kwara PDP, all the aspirants, who contested against Ajibola had since sent in their congratulatory messages to him."
Another source informed that, "as a mark of cessation of hostilities, all these aspirants, including the candidate, are already scheduled for a joint flight from FTC to Ilorin."
For Ajibola, "I didn't win but all of us won because without my co aspirants, we could not have won. Besides, without their supports it would be extremely difficult for me to pose any serious challenge to Ahmed. But with all of them rallying round me, success is already guaranteed."
