Hajj exercise commences, Saraki urges pilgrims to be good Ambassadors

Date: 2010-10-19

Just as flight operations for the 2010 hajj exercise commenced weekend at the Ilorin International Airport, Kwara State Governor, Dr Bukola Saraki has urged intending pilgrims from the State to be worthy ambassadors of the country by being obedient to Saudi Authorities.

Dr Saraki, who made the call on Sunday while addressing the first batch of 295 intending pilgrims and five officials at the Airport, charged them to avoid acts capable of tarnishing the image of the country during their stay in the holy land.

Hajj, the governor said is a lifetime opportunity which should not be wasted, stressing the need for the intending pilgrims to pay adequate attention to the purpose for which they were travelling to the holy land.

Saraki assured the intending pilgrims of adequate welfare to guarantee their comfort during their stay in Mecca and Medina, adding that arrangement had been concluded with the State Pilgrims’ Welfare Board to that effect.

The governor also expressed optimism that this year’s hajj exercise would be successful just like the previous ones in view of the antecedents of the State’s Amirul Hajj, Dr Badmas Lanre Yusuf, who was a former Commissioner at the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

He, however, warned officials of the Pilgrims’ Welfare Board against neglecting intending pilgrims from the State while in Saudi Arabia, pointing out that their welfare was paramount to the State Government.

Dr Saraki thereafter announced a donation of N10,000 to each of the 295 pilgrims that made the first flight.

Also speaking, the Amirul Hajj, Dr Badmas Yusuf assured that the wellbeing of the pilgrims would be paramount to him.

Dr Yusuf, who observed that governor Saraki had laid a solid foundation for a hitch-free hajj exercise, assured that he would live up to expectation in the conduct of this year’s hajj operation.

In his remark, the Board Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi AbdulHameed expressed appreciation to the governor for his continuous support to the board, noting that it had contributed to the success of previous hajj operations in the State.

While also commending Dr Saraki for appointing an experienced person as the Amirul Hajj, he disclosed that over 2,500 pilgrims were expected to perform this year’s hajj exercise from the State.
