Senate May End Stalemate On Defectors Today
The controversy over defection of 11 senators from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is expected to be laid to rest when the Senate resumes plenary today, Daily Trust learnt in Abuja.
The senate leadership led by David Mark has refused on three occasions within the last two weeks to read the joint letter announcing the senators' defection insisting that the matter was pending before the courts.
The Senate could not sit in plenary last Wednesday as the day's session was done behind closed doors where heated debate and arguments ensued between the leadership and the defectors led by Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki from Kwara State.
The matter could not be resolved and it was then decided that Senator Mark will seek further legal counsel on the issue, meet with the defectors on Monday (yesterday) ahead of another closed-door meeting in the Senate chamber this morning.
Daily Trust gathered that the meeting was yet to commence at the time of filing this report last night but that Mark was expecting the senators at his Apo legislative quarters residence.
When contacted, his spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, said he was not aware if his principal had sought legal opinion.
Calls put to both senate leaders Victor Ndoma-Egba and senate spokesmen Eyinnaya Abaribe were not answered. Text messages sent to their mobile lines were also not replied.
