Fulani Group Wants FG Help On Grazing Reserves
The president, All Fulani Elite Congress in Kwara State, Alhaji Ahmed Magaji, has called on the federal and state governments to establish permanent grazing reserves where Fulani cattle breeders can peacefully rear their animals.
Magaji, who advised that the areas should be exclusive to the breeders while trespassers should be severely dealt with, said the measure would go a long way in putting an end to the frequent clashes between cattle breeders and farmers. He spoke at the launch and fund raising of N150million for the construction of a secretariat for the Jamu Nati Fulbe Association, a Fulani socio-cultural organisation with dominance in the Yoruba speaking states including parts of the north.
"The economy should be enlarged in such a way that farmers can be engaged in other economic sectors to reduce pressure on the land so that there would be enough lands for farmers and cattle rearers, without unnecessary confrontation. Government has to establish permanent grazing lands; permanent cattle roots where stiff penalty could be specified for trespassers", he said.
He equally flayed what he called the marginalisation of nomads, calling on government to provide permanent employment for Fulanis who have acquired the required education.
Also speaking, president of the Jamu Nati Fulbe Association, Alhaji Salihu Abdulkadir, who said Jamu Nati literally means "Peace has returned for the Fulanis", said the group was formed a decade ago to enlighten nomads on the need to live in peace with people of different ethnic groups. Abdulkadir, who lamented that an average Fulani man is seen as a criminal, said it is time for the association to redeem the image of the tribe.
