Adisa no more craves for pardon from Obasanjo
The erstwhile Army General, who reacted to a recent statement credited to the Defence Headquarters that those found guilty for the 1997 coup were still ex-convicts, said that granting pardon now is belated.
He said: "I don't want this government to give me pardon again. Other people may beg for pardon but not me again. If another government after the expiration of the tenure of this government feels otherwise, I shall acknowledge the gesture.
"We met here in Ilorin, I mean some of us with the same problem. We decided to write a letter to the Defence Headquarters and the Headquarters promptly replied by saying that only the Presidency could effect our pardon.
"Later, some people said we were only given amnesty. I don't know what that means in the dictionary. In any case, why were we released if they knew that we truly committed an offence. If they had brought me the conditions, I would have made the right choice," he said.
Adisa, who spoke in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, read ethnic tone to his ordeal, claiming that some non-Yoruba military officers involved in the coup had been freed by the present regime.
He remarked that the alleged offence committed by President Olusegun Obasanjo in 1995, was not different from the one he (Adisa) was adjudged guilty in 1997.
He said: "Patrick Aziza did not just sentence Obasanjo for his involvement in the 1995 coup but he based his judgment on the evidence given by Bello Fadile. The records are there for anybody to cross-check, so if he is enjoying his pardon today as the president, somebody else may grant us pardon later."
Appraising the performance of the Obasanjo's administration, Adisa said it was a "fatal blow" to the socio-political and economic development of the country.
"There can never be any solution to Nigeria's problems until all the wrong become right. I am not one of those who would pray for Obasanjo not to complete his term but I only pray that 2007 should come quickly that our problem can be over."
Reiterating his support for former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida to return to the State House, Adisa said he would spearhead Babangida's political campaign.
He also expressed support for a national conference to enable Nigerians the opportunity to freely express their minds on recurring national issues, saying that the forum would put Nigeria on the path of political stability and economic growth.
