The corpse of a fleeing robbery suspect, who jumped into Asa River in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Tuesday, has been recovered.

It was learnt on Wednesday that the suspect had on Tuesday dispossessed a man of his motorcycle and bolted with it.

But his luck ran out when the motorcycle abruptly stopped and the victim raised the alarm which attracted passers-by.

Passers-by and nearby residents pursued and apprehended the fleeing robbery suspect while he was trying to start the motorcycle.

It was learnt that the crowd overpowered and undressed him. But the suspect suddenly escaped from the crowd and jumped into the river.

His corpse was seen on Tuesday floating on the river and was later recovered by local divers and the combined team of law enforcement agents.

The Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ezekiel Dabo, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Wednesday.

Dabo said, "The suspect was alleged to have stolen a motorcycle.  When people chased him, he jumped into a river in a bid to escape.

"The people pursuing him waited for sometime, but he did not surface. Three days later, his corpse was found floating on the river.

"They informed the police and his body was recovered. Nobody came for the body. As at the time he was arrested, the public removed his clothes but he took off from there and jumped into the river naked. There is no way to identify him."
