Kwara Inaugurates AbdulWahab Isa Committee On Upgrade Of Monarchs
The Kwara State government has inaugurated a committee on upgrade of traditional rulers in the state.
A former member of the House of Representatives, Alh. AbdulWahab Isa is the chairman of the committee.
Speaking during the inauguration of the committee, Governor AbdulFatah Ahmed, who was represented by his deputy, said the idea of constituting the committee was a bold step in response to the yearnings of the people for the upgrading of chieftaincy stools in the state.
The governor described traditional institution as a veritable tool for grass-roots mobilisation, cohesion, socio-economic development and political awareness.
While saying that traditional rulers were unifying symbols, Ahmed expressed confidence that their upgrading would serve as motivation and enhance their contribution to societal development.
He further expressed hope that the committee report would contribute towards resolving crises in the communities afflicted by chieftaincy disputes.
“I am aware that several requests for upgrading of traditional rulers have been received from across the state. It is expedient to scrutinise such requests and appropriately upgrade those traditional rulers deserving of elevation at this time based on the criteria set out in the terms of reference,” he said.
He said membership of the committee was based on track record and demonstrated capacity to add value to the deliberations on the issue.
He asked the committee to submit its report within six weeks and handle the assignment with the deserved honesty, sincerity of purpose and fear of God.
Responding, the committee’s chairman, Hon. AbdulWahab Isa thanked the government for giving them the opportunity to serve and promised to work within the ambit of the terms of reference.
