"Don't prosecute Saraki in the Media"
Supporters of former governor of Kwara State, Dr. Bukola Saraki, yesterday stormed the office of the Nigeria Police Special Fraud Unit (SFU), Milverton Road, Ikoyi urging the police to shun being used by politicians to persecute the man they referred to as a 'good leader'.
The supporters who stormed SFU in over 20 buses from Ilorin, Kwara State insisted that the police should not prosecute Saraki in the media.
The former governor was supposed to report at the SFU yesterday and answer questions over allegations of financial malpractices in former Intercontinental Bank, in which he was named as a suspect.
But as at 10am, his supporters thronged the area in their hundreds chanting songs and warning the police to be transparent and ensure they are not used by politicians to punish Dr. Saraki who is now a Senator unjustly. Unconfirmed report, however, said Saraki had appeared at the Nigeria Police High command in Abuja, yesterday morning.
Mrs. Ebun Owolabi, a member of Kwara State House of Assembly who was among the protesters warned that police should not allow anyone to use them.
Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kwara State, Mr. Ishola Fulani who led the protesters alleged that the former governor was being persecuted for his transparency and style of leadership.
Commissioner of Police in charge of SFU, Mr. Tunde Ogunshakin had said that his command would do all within its powers to bring all the culprits in the Intercontinental Bank scam to book.
In the statement, Ogunshakin had stated that the SFU was investigating a controversial waiver of N9, 97Billion, representing about 82% of N11.97billion indebtedness granted some companies in February 2010 by the board of the now defunct Intercontinental Bank Plc under the management of Mahmood Lai Alabi then as the MD/CEO of the bank.
According to the former EFCC chief investigator, "The companies that jointly incurred this indebtedness were Joy Petroleum Limited, Skyview Properties Ltd, Dicetrade, and Limkers Nigeria Ltd. The debts originated from several loans/facilities worth billions of Naira granted the companies, which were allegedly promoted by Senator (Dr.) Bukola Saraki between 2004 and 2009 when he was the Governor of Kwara State. The billions of Naira loans/facilities were used to purchase shares of blue chip companies and choice landed properties in Lagos and Abuja. Some of the landed properties worth billions of naira used to secure the loans were curiously released after payment of only N2.3Billion out of the N11.97 jointly owed the bank by the companies."
But Saraki's supporters insisted that his hands were clean in the allegation against him.
Meanwhile, the Action Congress of Nigeria(ACN), Kwara State Chapter has condemned the action of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) who used the state government fund in parking praise singers who stormed the police unit protesting the invitation of Saraki who was being investigated over alleged fraud.
In a statement by its chairman, Kayode Olawepo stated that the police invitation only confirm the party's position that Saraki administration was characterized by corruption and abuse of office. He said the deployment of government vehicle bought with public fund for such a venture indicates that the PDP did not want investigation into the alleged fraud.
He said Kwara people deserved public apology from the PDP and governor of the state for dragging their image in the mud through the shameful solidarity visit.
The statement further reads: "Saraki's personal business transactions are of no concern to us, but we note from the newspaper accounts that the transactions in questions took place while he was governor of Kwara State.
