FCC confirmation: War of words averted between Saraki, Nenadi

Date: 2013-12-11

WAR of words was averted in Senate yesterday between former governor of Kwara State, Senator Bukola Saraki and Senator Esther Nenadi Usman over comment made by latter against the former last week during confirmation of Professor Shuaibu Oba as the Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC).

Daily champion recalls that at the consideration of Oba’s nomination as Chairman of the Commission for another five years last Thursday, Senator Nenadi Usman had alleged that she personally took the professor to Senator Saraki’s office for the needed home support, only for Saraki to record the conversation that took place among the three of them that day and even played it to some people of the state thereafter as sole determinant of any appointee from there.

Nenadi had submitted last week:. “But the question here should be that the person in question here, has he visited his senators, shown them respect or not and the answer here is, he has. I know one occasion when he was there; I went there with Senator James Manager.

“The unfortunate thing which everyone in this chamber knows is that when he visited the senator, he recorded their discussion, played it out and sent it through blackberry messenger back to his senatorial constituents where he showed and said that he believed he was that important, otherwise why were people coming to talk to him about the issue which means no one could get appointment from Kwara without his blessing.

“Yes, he said it. I think that this is a distinguished chamber, we are all distinguished members and we must act as distinguished members. I therefore call on each and every member of this distinguished Senate to please, support the confirmation of not just the professor but other members.”

But Saraki who was absent when the allegation was raised last week, was very furious yesterday when he took up Senator Nenadi over it, saying that the former Minister of Finance lied against him.

Saraki who raised a point of Order citing order 15 under matter of privilege of the Senate standing rules, debunked the allegation levelled against him by Nenadi last week and demanded for her apology, failure of which he said, the Senate should refer the matter to its committee on Ethics and Privileges for thorough investigation and appropriate sanctioning.

“Mr. President, I rise through this order to register my displeasure to the unfounded and spurious allegation levelled against me by a fellow Senator, Nenadi Usman last week on this floor during the confirmation of appointments of nominees for the FCC jobs.

“I want to say that the Senator took advantage of my absence at that session to make such wicked lies against me and I want her to apologize here, failure of which I want the Senate to refer the matter to the committee on Ethics and Privileges for thorough investigation and appropriate sanctions against anybody found wanting”, he said.

But the Senate President quickly intervened by not only preventing Senator Nenadi Usman to make any comment but also promised to personally mediate between the two of them over the matter during the week.
