Kwara PDP elders disagree over defection to APC

Date: 2013-11-27

There is a discordant tune among elders of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State following the defection of the nPDP led by former Governor Bukola Saraki to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

While some elders of the party expressed total support for Saraki’s action, some kicked against it, saying they remain in the PDP.

Those who spoke to Daily Trust yesterday included a PDP elder and loyalist of Dr. Olusola Saraki, late strongman of Kwara politics, Alhaji Alarape Ayinla, PDP chairman in Kwara North, Alhaji Isiaka Oniwa and a former House of Representatives member, Alhaji Folorunsho Ayinla.

While Ayinla and Oniwa said they are in support of Saraki’s action, the former Reps member said he remains in PDP.

The former lawmaker Ayinla who was also an associate of late Saraki stressed that he was not in support of the decision to dump the PDP, saying, "I have made it clear to them, I am in PDP and I am not going to join any other party".

However, his namesake said, "100 per cent, I am in support of Saraki".

Also, Oniwa said members of the PDP in Kwara state align with Saraki’s decision, restating, "If Bukola goes right, we also go right, if he goes left, we also go left. We don’t have a party in Kwara State. Bukola Saraki is our party".

Meanwhile, it was a beehive of activities at the PDP secretariat yesterday following the decision of the Saraki-led party to declare for APC as PDP flags and billboards at the secretariat were being removed and pulled down when our correspondent visited yesterday.

The shout of APC also rented the air in what was described as a majority endorsement of the defection to APC. No official was on ground to speak on the latest development as at the time of filing this report.

However, a member of old PDP and former House of Representatives member, Hon. Ladi Edun described the defection as good riddance to bad rubbish, saying members of the Bamanga Tukur-led PDP are now in total control of the party.
