The University of Ilorin again showed its strength among Nigerian universities last Wednesday (December 11, 2013) when three of its doctoral graduates won laurels at the Nigerian Universities Doctoral Thesis Award Scheme (NUDTAS).

The Unilorin doctoral graduates, Sola-Ojo Foluke Eunice of the Faculty of Agriculture, Ojeniyi Sola Adetunji of the Faculty of Arts, and Gbenga-Ilori Abiodun Omowunmi of the Faculty of Engineering, were among the 17 winners of the 2010, 2011 and 2012 joint edition of the awards meant to reward academic excellence with special focus on outstanding doctoral theses.

The NUDTAS Award presentation, which took place at the Congress Hall, Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, was organised by the National Universities Commission (NUC) as part of the second phase of activities marking the Golden Jubilee of the Commission.

Also honoured alongside the awardees are their lecturers who supervised the award-winning doctoral theses.  The supervisors are: Prof. K. L. Ayorinde, who supervised Dr. Sola-Ojo's thesis, “Genetic Evaluation of the Fulani Ecotype Chicken for Meat and Egg Production”; Prof. (Mrs.) Victoria Adunola Alabi, who supervised Dr. Ojeniyi's thesis, “Semiotic Study of the Ideological Tenets of Protest in ten Nigerian Plays”; and Prof. T. S. Ibiyemi, who supervised Dr. Gbenga-Ilori's thesis, “Development of VHF and UHF Spectrum Optimization for Digital Services in Selected States of Nigeria”.

Of the other awardees, three each are from the University of Lagos and the University of Port Harcourt; two each from the University of Calabar and the University of Agriculture, Makurdi.

Also, the Universities of Jos and Uyo, the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi produced one awardee each.
