Opinion:Review lawmakers' pay by Adisa Adebayo

Date: 2013-09-13

Adisa Adebayo, 42, Anifowose Street, Ilorin, Kwara State, +23470515193:

The Federal Government has declared its inability to pay the N92bn additional wage bill being demanded by the striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

In a statement made by the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, she said the recurrent expenditure of the government is over 77 per cent! Which means there is little left for infrastructural development.

This, obviously, has brought to the fore the need to review the salaries of public officers to allow for equitable pay for equitable work. That is why we will have to start with the jumbo pay of the members of the National Assembly and the federal executive members!

The work of the National Assembly is not on a full time basis, that is why the members have three to four recesses in a year! They should only receive sitting allowances.
