Consensus best for presidential system of govt - Saraki
Saraki said where there is honesty, transparency; fairness and sincerity, there would be a perfect consensus arrangement that would work for the country at all levels.
He stated these while speaking at the State Congress of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), held in Ilorin, the state capital, last weekend.
Saraki's submission was coming on the heels of a call by the Chairman, Congress Electoral Panel, Barrister J. O Maboh, that other states of the federal should take a cue from the consensus congress held in the state.
According to Saraki, "What we have been able to show today in Ilorin, Kwara State is how party politics should be played. Party politics under the presidential system we operate is merely a family affair; we use the party politics, party progress during election to prepare for the general elections.
"With this spirit where there is equity, fairness, honesty and sincerity, there will be consensus. It is in that spirit we believe what is due to us will come to us; with that spirit of give and take we have been able to achieve what we have achieved today."
While assuring those that could not make the list of the executive committee, he said, "Power belongs to God" and that through commitment and loyalty to the party, they would all be taken care of in due course.
Saraki, who said the past Executive members were unanimously returned because of their performance said, "you have performed because performance is based on election results."
He, therefore, tasked the new leadership of the party to ensure a 100 per cent victory of the party in 2013 local government elections in the state and as well ensure that Offa, the only local government being controlled by the opposition is returned to the ruling party.
Earlier in his remarks, the panel chairman from the party National Secretariat had said, "the congress is conducted in a carnival-like atmosphere where everyone is happy," saying "this is the principle that the PDP wants and would like to recommend it to other states of the federation to follow."
Maboh said a total of 781 delegates from the 193 wards and 16 local government areas of the state participated in the congress.
Giving a breakdown of the delegates, he said 567 delegates emerged from the 193 wards in the state, while five delegates participated from each of the 16 local government areas of the state, totalling 80.
According to him, 139 additional delegates, whom be called "automatic delegates," comprising the state governor, former governors, members of the National and State Assemblies, among others, also made up the list.
He said voting was conducted through affirmation because, according to him, there was no opposition for any of the 28 posts available.
