Attack On Former Offa LG Boss, A False Alarm - Kwara PDP

Date: 2013-06-25

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has described media reports about alleged attack by gunmen on the former Chairman of Offa Local Government Area and a member of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Prince Saheed Popoola as a false alarm.

The party claim the false alarm is designed to whip up undue political sentiments and cause unnecessary security tension ahead of the local government elections in the state.

According to a statement issued by its secretary, Prince Yemi Afolayan, he noted that the said gunmen were Prince Popoola’s hoodlums who fell out with him. "PDP members in Offa local government and indeed across the state are responsible and peace loving and would not engage in any act of rascality and political brigandage typical of the drowning ACN in Kwara state. We are the party in power, why should we then heighten political and security tension in the state", Afolayan asked.

According to Afolayan, the current fragmentation of the ACN and the struggle for who gets what in the party towards the next general election are responsible for the recent acts of hooliganism by its members.

The PDP said the ACN and its leaders were unfortunately playing politics with the issue of life and death in order to appear to remain relevant in the political terrains of Kwara State.

The PDP therefore called on the police to ensure that the so-called assassination attempt was unravelled while the initiator of the allegation should be subjected to forensic examination.

Meanwhile, the Governor of Kwara State, Dr Abdulfatah Ahmed called on the Nigerian Police, Kwara State Command, to carry out thorough investigation of alleged attempt by some gun totting individuals to attack a former Chairman of Offa Local Government Area of the State, Prince Saheed Popoola with a view to bringing the culprits to book, just as he cautioned politicians from undue political provocation and sensationalising security issues.

In another statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Abdulwahab Oba, the governor warned that his administration frowns against any acts that could threaten the life of any individual or groups in the State.

He condemned attempt by any individual to attack anybody either with the aim of causing bodily harm or possible death as the sanctity of life should be upheld at all times.

The Governor warned that his administration would not condone any act that could threaten the peace of any community and the state in general.
