Consultant Blames Miscarriage On Air Pollution

Date: 2013-06-11

A Consultant Paediatrician, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Prof Abdulwahab Johnson said air pollution could cause miscarriage.

Johnson told newsmen in Ilorin that the content of air pollution, such as industrial fumes and smoke from automobiles, might  affect the weight of the unborn babies.

"Research conducted in 10 countries by the World Health Organisation (WHO) indicated that air pollution could hinder the formation of internal organs of babies," he said.

The paediatrician said that exposure to air pollution in household was also the cause of respiratory diseases.

"As much as possible, air pollution, whether domestic or industrial, should be avoided.

"The government must monitor the activities of industries on the extent of emission in the environment.

"It should also ban the use of firewood and charcoals, while at the same time, provide cleaner culinary fuel, which should be affordable for all.

He called for green revolution to save the environment from degradation.
