12 remanded over Ilorin protest
An Ilorin magistrates' court has remanded 12 persons in connection with recent protest over the shooting of a student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.
It will be recalled that commercial activities in the state capital were paralysed on Monday and Tuesday, after students of the polytechnic took to the streets, after a police corporal on bank escort shot their colleague, Ahmed Dayo, on the legs.
Twelve people who were arrested in connection with the protest were charged before the magistrates' court on Thursday for alleged "disturbance of public peace, rioting and mischief by fire, contrary to sections 113, 106 and 337 of Penal Code Law."
According to the police first information report, "some group of persons armed with various offensive weapons gathered themselves together around some major streets in Ilorin metropolis, resulting into a riotous situation which led to burning of tyres by the said people."
They were said to have burnt down a police post on Sakama Street, police traffic control booths and destructed some public properties.
The defence counsel pleaded that the suspect be released on bail, which the prosecution objected to, arguing that investigation was ongoing.
The presiding magistrate, I. O. Olawoyin. in her ruling, ordered that the suspects be remanded at the Federal Prison, Madalla and adjourned the case till June 13.
