'Kwara State Govt Spends N2.3bn on Rural Roads'
The Kwara state government has spent the total sum N2.3billion on the construction of rural road in the last two years of the administration. The state commissioner for works and transports, Alhaji (Dr) Abubakar Kannike said this recently during the visit by the Democracy Dividend Tour Team of the state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
The commissioner mentioned that the sum of money was expended on the construction of 41 road across the state.
He also said the state government and the federal government has resumed discussion to covert the old Jebba road (Sango road) to dual carriage road.
Kannike while stressing the importance of good road said it was essential for economic development and social transformation.
He stated that the state government has embarked on the construction and rehabilitation of some federal roads in the state in an effort to ensure that the people of kwara state adequately receives dividends of democracy.
The commissioner mentioned that inadequate resources are the major challenge facing the state government adding that the government has come up with financial engineering solution to ensure that all projects are completed.
Kannike further said that cargo terminal would soon be put into operation, adding that government is looking into the proposal of two private cargo handling companies to handle the management.
In his remark, the state chairman of the union, Comrade Abiodun AbdulKareem, thanked the commissioner concluding that the democracy dividend tour was conceived to educate the people on the activities of the government
