Date: 2013-05-10

Professor of Counselling Psychology, Department of Counselling Department, University of Ilorin, Sunday Umoh, has advocated sex education in secondary schools in a bid to safeguard girls from premarital and reckless sexual experimental activities, which according to him may lead to pregnancy, abortion and even death.

Professor Umoh made the call at the One hundred and Thirty-first Inaugural lecture of the institution titled “That Your Road Not Be Rough”.

According to him, parents are usually alarmed when female children are growing up into maturity with the fear of the girls becoming pregnant as result of rape, reckless sexual experiment among others.

“Sex education by trained teachers should be given to adolescent within the school setting in order to eliminate family disagreement and protect such female child against bad influence,” he said.

The professor, however, recommended life imprisonment as stricter penalties for men who participate in raping, advising parents to be good role model by taken adequate care of their sons and daughters.
