Kwara ACN Crisis Gets Messier as Faction Elects New Chair
The crisis rocking the Kwara State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) took another dimension yesterday as a faction of the party refused to recognize the caretaker committee set up to manage the affairs of the party and appointed Mr. Toyin Ayinla as its new chairman.
Ayinla was until Tuesday, the secretary of the committee put in place by the faction which was chaired by Mr Kayode Olawepo.
A statement from the committee urged party members to support the new leadership and assured the public of the party’s commitment “to lead the collective yearning for good governance and continuous struggle against tyranny of the few which is militating against the state’s human and infrastructural development.”
Mr. Olawepo when contacted told Daily Trust that the new committee is null and void and as such has no power to dissolve his committee, stressing that only the National Executive Committee of the party has the power to dissolve a state executive.
“Nobody has written a letter or petition against me as the chairman of the party and the purported suspension is frivolous and should be discountenanced”, he said.
The party has been enmeshed in leadership crisis over an alleged attempt to dump the 2011 governorship candidate, Belgore and give the ticket to the party’s national publicity secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.
The new group is believed to be working for Belgore while the other headed by Olawepo is believed to be loyal to the ACN spokesman.
