KWARA: House Makes Case for Communities along River Banks
By Zarumi Mashood
The Kwara State Hose of Assembly has urged the state government to as a matter of urgency resettle all those communities along the river banks and waterways.
The House made the plea in a notice of motion on prevention of future flooding in the state sponsored by Barrister Kamaldeen Fagbemi representing Oke-Ogun Constituency, and two other members.
It implored the state government to appeal to the Federal Government to extend the dredging of River Niger to include Jebba and ensure regular routine monitoring of waterways to prevent dumping of refuse and construction on waterways and river banks.
The House reminded stakeholders to ensure that no building or development is approved or carried out in flood prone areas and embark on regular policy education and enlightenment of farmers, rural and urban settlers along waterways and river banks on the hazard of flooding, global warning and the need to relocate and keep off such areas in their interest.
It urged the State Government to give assistance to the affected farms and communities with improved seeds, seedling and other farm inputs that would cushion the effect of flooding.
