Again, Two People Killed in Kwara Communal Crisis

Fighting continued yesterday at Ganmo in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State. Two more people were confirmed dead in the violence by the police. At the press time yesterday, the police said that six other people, including two policemen were critically injured in the violence. The policemen were reported stabbed in the belly.

Seven houses were also razed and 15 people arrested in connection with the incident. Many residents fled as sporadic shooting of local guns rented the air. Commuters and vehicles were diverted to the bush to avoid being hit by stray bullets. The violence also paralysed commercial and social activities in the community.

Meanwhile, police said later in the afternoon that they had mobilised a special squad, led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, to restore normalcy to the troubled community. It will be recalled violence broken out on Saturday in Ganmo following an age long dispute over the traditional rulership of the town.

The traditional rulership had become a bone of contention between Ilorin aborigines, who described themselves as the descendants of Laderin, the son of the legendary Afonja and the Igbomina settlers, who claimed the ownership of the town. Two policemen were allegedly killed on Sunday when the fierce fight became bloody. Many people were also injured in the violence.
