The Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS) has celebrated one of its staff members, Mardhiyyah Abdussalam, for winning two silver medals at the recently concluded FIDE World Amateur Rapid & Blitz Chess Championship 2026.

The championship was held from August 1 to 8 at the Bolton White Event Hall in Abuja, Nigeria, bringing together amateur chess players from different parts of the world.

Abdussalam delivered an impressive performance, finishing as first runner-up in both the U2000 Rapid Woman and U2000 Blitz Woman categories.

Her double podium finish was described by KW-IRS as a demonstration of exceptional intellectual ability, tactical skill and resilience on the international stage.

The achievement also highlights the quality of talent within the organisation and reflects the emphasis the Service places on excellence and staff development.

Commenting on the feat, the Executive Chairman of KW-IRS, Shade Omoniyi, congratulated Abdussalam for bringing honour to the Service, Kwara State and Nigeria.

Omoniyi noted that the strategic thinking and analytical abilities required in chess were also valuable qualities in modern tax administration, describing Abdussalam's achievement as an inspiration to her colleagues.
