ABS Ilorin FC Survive Relegation After Dramatic Victory in Sokoto
Director of Football at Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) Ilorin FC, Chief Alloy Chuwuemeka, has praised the team's resilience and fighting spirit following their vital victory in Sokoto that secured their Nigeria National League (NNL) status for another season.
ABS Ilorin FC defied the odds with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Sokoto United at the Giginya Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
The victory was crucial, as the Ilorin-based side needed not only to secure all three points but also rely on a favourable result elsewhere to avoid relegation.
Heading into the encounter, ABS faced a daunting task of defeating Sokoto United on their home turf whilst hoping that Lobi Stars would overcome City FC in Abuja.
The pressure-filled scenario set the stage for a dramatic final day, and Coach Ogundeji Joel-led side rose to the occasion and delivered.
The decisive moment came in the 28th minute through a rather unusual sequence of play. Captain Timothy Boniface delivered a long-range free kick from inside his own half, which was inadvertently headed into the net by a Sokoto United defender in a defensive error, handing ABS the lead.
Despite intense pressure from the hosts and the high stakes of the encounter, ABS Ilorin FC showed composure and determination, holding on to their slender advantage until the final whistle.
Their survival was ultimately confirmed as Lobi Stars edged City FC in Abuja, completing a remarkable escape from relegation.
Chief Alloy Chuwuemeka addressing the team on Tuesday Morning upon their arrival in Ilorin from Sokoto, lauded the team's character and commitment throughout the challenging fixture.
"This is a team that has shown incredible resilience and belief, even in the most difficult circumstances. The players gave everything on the pitch, and this result is a testament to their hard work and unity," he said.
He further commended the technical crew and supporters for their unwavering backing, emphasising that the club's survival was a collective effort.
ABS Ilorin FC's dramatic victory not only secured their place in the NNL but also highlighted the team's never-say-die attitude an attribute that Chief Alloy believes will be vital as the club looks ahead to a more stable and successful campaign next season.
