SDP Dismisses Fear Over Lawal's Resignation, Vows Focus On Grassroots Rebuilding
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kwara State has broken its silence regarding the resignation of its 2023 governorship candidate, Hakeem Lawal, asserting that his departure does not weaken the party's structure or its prospects for 2027.
In a joint statement issued on Thursday, January 29, 2026, the State Chairman, Barrister Ibrahim Sharafdeen, and the Secretary, Ibrahim Olamilekan Quadri, characterized Lawal's exit as a routine exercise of his constitutional right to freedom of association. They emphasized that the SDP is a mass movement built on social-democratic principles rather than the individual ambitions of any political elite.
"The SDP is anchored on the mandate of market women, farmers, teachers, artisans, and youths across Kwara State," the statement read. The leadership argued that the party's true strength is derived from its grassroots base, which remains intact despite high-profile realignments.
The party further suggested that the recent exits of some members actually benefit the SDP by fostering "ideological cohesion." According to the leadership, some of those leaving had long been disconnected from the party's core values a factor they blamed for certain challenges during the 2023 elections.
While wishing Hakeem Lawal well in his future political endeavors, the SDP leadership announced that it is currently undergoing an internal rebuilding process. This initiative is focused on strengthening ward structures, ideological discipline, and grassroots mobilization.
The statement concluded with a firm resolve that the SDP remains the most viable alternative for Kwarans seeking governance that prioritizes social justice and economic equity.
The Kwara SDP urged its members and supporters to disregard any suggestion of instability, describing the current moment as a "new dawn" for a more united and determined party.
The party further reiterated its commitment to presenting a credible alternative to the ruling party and continuing its struggle for inclusive governance that prioritises the interests of ordinary Kwarans.
The Informant247 reports that Hakeem Lawal announced his official resignation from the party on Wednesday, with strong indications pointing to his return to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
