Unilorin at 50: Golden Jubilee Celebrations Kick Off with Grand Walk Show to Emir of Ilorin's Palace.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin (Unilorin), Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole SAN, has stated that the week-long golden jubilee celebrations of the institution are designed to highlight the university's impact, draw attention to its achievements over the past five decades, and reaffirm its readiness for future innovations.
Professor Egbewole made this known on Monday during the anniversary Walk Show of a long motorcade which kickstarted from the university community to the palace of the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari.
Flagging off the event at the main Gate of the university, Professor Egbewole expressed appreciation to the university community for coming out in large numbers, describing their participation as an affirmation of their commitment to the growth and ideals of the institution.
The Vice-Chancellor led top management staff, alumni, and students of the university on the colourful walk show to usher in activities marking the 50th anniversary of the university. The huge presence of students and staff was notable, as the management had declared Monday a lecture and work-free day.
Professor Egbewole noted that the walk also symbolises the University's strong bond with its host community, emphasising that the institution remains an active and proud participant in the socio-economic development of Ilorin and Kwara State.
As earlier as 7:00 a.m. hundreds of staff , students and friends of the University converged at the institution's fountain roundabout , proudly waving the UNILORIN @ 50 flags as they sang the melodious "better by far" university school anthem.
The walk which commenced from the university's fountain roundabout, permanent site, saw the long anniversary motorcade moving through the densely populated university road, Tanke -Tipper garage - Ahmadu Bello way road, down to general post office road.
From the popular post office road, the motorcade went through Emir's road moving straith to the palace of the emir of Ilorin where the management paid homage to the Emir of Ilorin and chairman, Kwara traditional council , Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari.
At the Emir of ilorin's palace,the Vice Chancellor said the university would continue to do everything within its means to uplift the status of the palace and Ilorin Emirate.
The Emir of Ilorin Alhaji Ibrahim Suku Gambari in his response said he's proud of the university and it's sterling achievements in the last five decades.
The reverred monarch commended the management and staff of the university since inception for the achievements, stressing that the palace would continue to support the institution in achieving its set targets.
