Kwara South Stakeholders Slam Federal Legislators Over Poor Representation
Stakeholders in Kwara South Senatorial District have criticised federal lawmakers from the zone over what they described as poor and ineffective representation since their election to the National Assembly.
The stakeholders, under the platform of the Kwara South Development Initiative, spoke during a strategic consultation meeting held in Ilorin on Monday, themed "Reawakening the Giant."
They accused the legislators Deputy Senate Leader Lola Ashiru, representing Kwara South Senatorial District; Member representing Oyun/Offa/Ifelodun federal constituency, Hon. Tijani Kayode Ismail; and Member representing Ekiti/Irepodun/Oke-Ero/Isin constituency, Hon. Abdulraheem Olawuyi Ajuloopin of failing to initiate meaningful projects or impact the lives of their constituents. They said this had slowed the growth of the district.
Speaking on behalf of traditional rulers in the zone, Chairman of the Igbomina Traditional Council and the Olupo of Ajase-Ipo, Oba Mohammed Bolaji Alebiosu, alleged that the lawmakers had shown no genuine interest in their people.
According to him, "Can anyone see the impact of any member of the National Assembly representing us? They have failed to touch the lives of their constituents. If you invite them for religious or community development purposes, they will not turn up."
The monarch added that the electorate would pay the legislators back at the polls in 2027. He urged residents to collect money from politicians but vote for credible candidates.
Convener of KSDI, Dr Johnson Adewumi, also expressed disappointment, noting that despite producing five senators and several members of the House of Representatives since 1999, the district had little to show.
He said, "Our citizens have chaired several committees in both chambers of the National Assembly with no tangible contribution. We cannot find any project of value in the entire Kwara South. This is unacceptable."
In his remarks, the State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Prince Sunday Fagbemi, admitted that representation from the district was below expectations.
He said the APC would not field non-performing candidates in future elections, stressing that the party would thoroughly screen aspirants before presenting them to the electorate.
