Fire Service Saves Millions in Challenge Market Blaze, Limits Damage to 10 Kiosks
The Kwara State Fire Service acted swiftly to contain a blaze at Challenge Market's Phone Village in Ilorin on Wednesday, 30 April 2025, at 21:06, preventing significant losses to goods worth hundreds of millions of naira.
The fire crew responded to a distress call and arrived to find several shops engulfed in flames. Challenge Market, which includes over 120 shops, 80 kiosks, and numerous stalls, was largely spared due to the firefighters' rapid intervention and tactical expertise. The blaze was limited to 10 kiosks, primarily affecting phone stores and repair outlets.
Initial investigations indicate the fire was caused by a power surge.
Traders and market stakeholders commended the Kwara State Fire Service for their rapid response and effectiveness in saving the market from widespread destruction.
The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, expressed his sympathy to the market leadership, affected traders, and the entire market community. He prayed that all losses incurred in the incident would be divinely restored in multiple folds.
