Kwara Launches Gender-Balanced Agri-Committee to Boost Farmer Support

Date: 2025-04-09

In a significant move to advance agricultural development in Kwara State, the government has inaugurated a 7-member Interim Caretaker Committee to champion farmers' interests, enhance trust in state interventions, and strengthen agricultural support systems.

The committee, comprising members selected from across the state's regions, prioritises merit, grassroots agricultural engagement, and dedication to the sector. Reflecting Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq's commitment to gender inclusivity, the committee maintains a balanced gender representation to empower women in agriculture.

The inauguration ceremony, held at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development headquarters in Ilorin, saw attendance from ministry officials, committee members, agricultural stakeholders, and community representatives.

Dr. Afees Abolore Alabi, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, urged the committee to uphold integrity, fairness, and community-focused service while representing farmers' needs.

“This committee is not just symbolic—it is strategic,” emphasized Dr. Alabi, underscoring the administration's commitment to delivering timely support to farmers. He outlined key responsibilities for the committee, including verifying the authenticity of beneficiaries, preventing the diversion of agricultural inputs, and collaborating with enforcement agencies to guarantee transparency.

He also highlighted the importance of acting as a crucial link between the government and farmers, particularly with the planting season on the horizon.

Dr. Alabi commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his steadfast support of farmers throughout the State, asserting that the committee's work will significantly impact agricultural success and timely interventions.

Mallam Abdullahi Ibu Ahmed, speaking on behalf of the committee, expressed gratitude for the trust placed in them by the state government. He reaffirmed their commitment to transparency, fairness, and equitable resource distribution, promising to prioritize farmers' needs and align with the Governor's vision.

Mrs. Funke Sokoya, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, remarked on the significance of the committee's establishment as a proactive step to enhance coordination within the agricultural sector. She reiterated the committee's critical role in efficiently delivering government interventions and congratulated members on their appointments.

Other notable attendees included the Senior Special Assistant on Agriculture, Alhaji Musa Baba Mohammed, and the State Project Coordinator of ACReSAL, Alhaji Samsudeen Olatunbosun Aregbe, along with various stakeholders in the agricultural sector.

As the planting season approaches, the newly inaugurated committee is prepared to hit the ground running, ensuring that Kwara's farmers receive the necessary support to thrive in the coming season.
