Kwara Police Launch Murder Probe After Cattle Breeders Leader Shot Dead

The Kwara State Police Command has launched an investigation into the murder of Alhaji Idris Abubakar, the chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in the state.

The 32-year-old victim was reportedly shot dead by unidentified gunmen around 10 pm on Saturday at the entrance of his residence in Oke-Oyi, Oke Ose, Ilorin East Local Government Area .

In a statement released on Sunday, the state police spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed the incident. Detectives recovered five expended 7.62mm bullet casings from the scene, and the victim's body was taken to the mortuary at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.

The police further stated: “The Kwara State Police Command confirms the murder of Alhaji Idris Abubakar, chairman of MACBAN, who was shot dead on 8 March 2025 at the entrance of his residence in Oke-Ose, Oke-Oyi.”

“The State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has commenced a full investigation. CP Victor Olaiya, psc(+), assures that the perpetrators will be brought to justice and urges the public to remain calm and provide useful information,” the statement read.

The Special Assistant to Kwara State on Inter-Community Relations (Fulani), Muhammed Abdullahi, has also confirmed the killing of Abubakar.

PUNCH Online gathered that the assailants ambushed him and shot him at close range before fleeing the scene, leaving him in a pool of blood.

Abdullahi said, “Yes, he was killed in front of his residence on Saturday night by gunmen who left him for dead.

“We are preparing for his janaza as I speak, but the police were here yesterday and have begun an investigation.”

An eyewitness, Aina'u Sarki, said, “I was with him 20 minutes before he was killed. Someone called me on the phone and told me he had been shot dead.”

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association also confirmed the assassination of its chairman in a statement by its Secretary, Alhaji Abdulazeez Mohammed, on Sunday.

The statement read, “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un.

“With deep sorrow, we announce the tragic passing of our esteemed Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Kwara State Chapter, Alhaji Idris Abubakar Sakaina, who was killed by unknown gunmen yesterday at his Okeose residence at about 10 pm prompt. He is survived by 2 wives and 6 children.

“May Allah (SWT) grant him mercy, forgive his shortcomings, and admit him into Aljannah Firdausi.

“His Janaza (funeral prayer) will take place today at 10:00 AM in Zango, Ilorin, Kwara State.

“May Allah grant him aljanatul firdauz and give his family the fortitude to bear the loss.”
