NANS Urges FG to Ban Sale of Handouts in Tertiary Institutions

Date: 2013-01-23

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Kwara Chapter, on Tuesday called on the Federal Government to ban the sale of handouts in tertiary institutions in the country.

The Chairman of the chapter, Akorede Shakiru, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin.

He said NANS was in support of the motion by a Kwara Assembly member, Mr Moshood Bakare, concerning the sale of handouts in the nation's tertiary institutions.

Shakiru said the reason for the production of handouts had been defeated, adding that lecturers had resorted to extortion of students.

"An unbiased sentiment could be that provision of handouts for students is necessary in Nigerian tertiary institutions as an effective way of boosting learning skills.

"However, what we are against is extortion of money from students in the name of sale of handouts," he said.

Shakiru called on the State Assembly and the Federal Government to implement policies that would prevent extortion of students.

He said NANS was in support of production of textbooks and other learning materials.

Mr Kunle Akogun, the Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs Department of the University of Ilorin, told NAN that it was illegal for the institution's lecturers to sell handouts.

He warned that any lecturer caught in the act would be sanctioned. (NAN)
