Date: 2024-08-22

According to a concerning news report from Daily Trust, seventy-five residents of Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, have been jailed within just one week for committing environmental offences, including the indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

Giving an update on the ongoing measures by the government to stop the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on Monday, the Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, said, “An Ilorin magistrates' court, on Saturday, sentenced another 14 members of the public to a three-month jail term each for violating Kwara State Environmental Law, making a total number of convicted persons within one week 75.

“This is an indication that the government is resolute about putting a total stop to indiscriminate dumping of refuse in Kwara State.

“The move is to prevent environmental diseases, and offenders now face three months' jail or fines ranging from N30,000 to N50,000.”

Meanwhile, Hajia Nafisat charged the waste management consultants in the state to be proactive in the discharge of their duties to the public.

She gave the charge while inspecting their operational vehicles to ascertain their efficiency and durability, according to a statement by her spokesman, Kamaldeen Aliagan.
