ASUP wants retirement age of 70 for members

Date: 2012-03-01

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has urged the Federal Government and the National Universities Commission to extend the 70 years retirement age of professors in Nigerian universities to their members.

The Senate had approved retirement age of professors to 70 years and upped the pensionable age of other academic staff and non-academic staff of universities to 65 years.

ASUP National President, Chibuzo Asomugha, disclosed this to newsmen at a capacity building programme organized for leaders of the union by the Michael Imodu National Institute for Labour Studies in Ilorin, Kwara State.

"We have been meeting with the Senate and the House of Representatives to see how our sector can be accommodated in that law.

"We are doing this not because we want to compete with the university but because of the negative effect the law will have on our sector. It could deplete the sector," he said.

Earlier, the Director-General of Michael Imodu Institute, John Olanrewaju, noted that no investor would invest in a society where crisis prevails and expressed hope that the training would benefit the ASUP leaders.
