Date: 2012-12-25

Speaker of Kwara State House of Assembly, Hon. Abdulrasaq Atunwa, at the weekend, hinted that the Assembly passed about 71 resolutions, 23 substantive motions and 14 bills in the outgoing year.

Atunwa, who dropped the hint to journalists in Ilorin, shortly after Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, presented the state budget proposal for 2013 to the Assembly, said: "Every constituency in the state was touched with oversight function and debates of the Assembly."

The speaker stated that the 71 resolutions passed by the Assembly arose from petitions and debates, adding that the Assembly ranked among the first three in the country if not the first, going by the success recorded.

The Speaker further stated that many councillors in the country have been allegedly accused of dereliction of duty because those who elected them fail to mandate them to give account of their stewardship.

He said the people who elected them needed to put them on their (councillors) toes, stressing that this would make them to be more alive to their responsibility of serving the interest of the people of their constituencies they represent at the councils.

The speaker, who asserted that the Assembly had been up to the task in the discharge of its duty by being accountable to the people who elected.

Atunwa said N94.4 billion budget proposal presented by Ahmed was targeted to take care of the interest of the people, assuring that the Assembly would do justice to it and pass it as quick as possible.
