Court dissolves 16-year-old marriage over wife's request
An Area Court at Centre-Igboro, Ilorin, Kwara, has dissolved the Islamic marriage between Rashidat Mumeen and Saliman Mumeen at the request of the wife.
The presiding judge, Abdul Qadir Umar, ruled that the husband and wife should go their separate ways due to their inability to settle their misunderstanding.
Umar said that the wife should observe the three-month Iddah period, as prescribed by Islam, and that they must conduct another Islamic marriage if they want to continue as husband and wife again.
He, however, granted Rashidat custody of the four children produced by the union.
The husband had earlier agreed to the wife's divorce application but wanted custody of the children to keep them in his mother's care.
His wife, however, objected, saying that she wouldn't allow anyone to take care of her children on her behalf while alive.
