KWSG Tasks Waste Collectors
Kwara State Government on Thursday, warned commercial waste contractors to sit up and dress their operational strategies towards ensuring effective waste management and a clean environment in the Ilorin metropolis.
The state Commissioner for Environment and Forestry, Barrister Kayode Towoju, gave the warning during a meeting he held with the contractors in the ministry, adding that the task of effective waste management in Ilorin metropolis would not be compromised.
According to Towoju, government would not leave any stone unturned at ensuring regular and prompt collection of wastes in every part of the state capital to safeguard the health of the people.
The commissioner stated that government would not condone indiscriminate dumping of wastes in any form, adding that corporate organizations have been encouraged to cultivate environmental friendly-habit to promote sustainable clean environment in their workplaces.
The commissioner noted that the Clean and Green programme in Kwara State is aimed at sustaining a clean and healthy environment and urged the citizenry to see environmental sustainability as a civic responsibility.
He appealed to Kwarans to be receptive to environmental programmes in order to jointly tackle environmental challenges and maintain the legacy of the Clean and Green programme.
Barrister Towoju however promised to ensure adequate advocacy and enforcement of law while he also promising to ensure the provision of four additional dumpsites to accommodate wastes generated in Ilorin metropolis.
Earlier, the chairman of the waste contractors, Alhaji Abu Aremu, pledged the commitment and cooperation of the contractors to their assignments and called for prompt attention to challenges affecting their services.
Alhaji Aremu also stressed the need to focus on revenue collection and curb patronage of unapproved waste collectors in the state.
In another meeting with Kwara Environmental Protection Agency Board and Management staff, Towoju charged the officers to be committed to their responsibilities.
He advised the staff of the agency to be proactive in their attitude in order to effect positive changes.
The board chairman, Barrister Bisi Atolagbe, expressed dismay over people's attitude to issues of environment, which according to him was responsible for frequent natural and man-made disasters in the society.
