2023 ambition: Resign by Friday, Kwara govt directs political appointees
The Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has directed political appointees seeking elective positions in 2023 to tender their resignation letters no later than Friday, April 15, 2022.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Mamman Jibril, a copy of which was obtained by The PUNCH in Ilorin on Tuesday.
According to the statement, Abdulrazaq said, while quoting the recent Electoral Act 2022 signed by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), the Act provides that political appointees aspiring to contest elections must resign their positions before the conduct of political party primaries.
The statement also stated that "all resignation letters are to be submitted to the office of the Secretary to the Kwara State Government not later than 15th April 2022."
The statement read in part, "In line with the provision of Section 84(12) of the new Electoral Act, all Kwara State Government's appointees seeking nominations for elective offices in the forthcoming primaries are hereby directed to resign."
It said, "All resignation letters are to be submitted to the office of the Secretary to the Kwara State Government not later than 15th April 2022."
Our correspondent, however, gathered that it was not yet clear if any of the 20 commissioners and other political appointees, who were appointed less than a year ago by the governor, was nursing the political ambition to contest elective offices in the 2023 general election.
