Ilorin: Ihejirika Charges Army Personnel on Security
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, has urged officers and men of the Nigerian Army to remain resilient in their fight against terror attacks in the country.
Ihejirika made the call in an address at the opening of Nigerian Army Education Corps inter-division and Headquarters Map Reading competition in Ilorin on Monday.
Represented by Maj.-Gen. Mohammed Abubakar, the General Officer Commanding 2nd Division, Ihejirika said that the current security challenges in the country required collective efforts.
He said the spate of bombings had adversely taken economic and psychological tolls on the people and business, especially in the northern part of the country.
According to him, the current insurgence has necessitated the Nigerian Army to review its doctrine with a view to updating the training and operational procedures, to fulfil its constitutional mandate.
He commended the determination of the Nigerian Army Education Corps to write a book on terrorism.
This, he said, would contribute positively to army's determination to fight the security challenges and serve as reference material for researchers on Nigerian Army.
He described the competition as a laudable one which should be sustained to enhance the capability of the officers and men.
Ihejirika urged participants to apply the spirit of team work, endurance and sportsmanship, to achieve the objectives of the competition.
Maj.-Gen. L. M. K. Banjiram, the acting Commander, Nigerian Army Education Corps, said the competition would foster team work and competitive spirit amongst competitors.
Banjiram said the exercise would serve as refresher training in map reading and land navigation which would enhance the understanding of the subject during field training exercise.
He said the competition, tagged "Ex-Eagle Eye III", was designed to include officers and men of the corps and give it an all round inclusiveness.
Gov. Abdufatah Ahmed, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Saka Onimago, commended the acting commander for the competition.
Ahmed said the competition was timely because of the current security challenges in the country.
The governor expressed the hope that the competition would improve the efficiency and performance of the participants.
Ahmed pledged that the government would continue to support the corps toward achieving its objectives.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 70 personnel would take part in the four-day competition.
It will cover areas such as how to navigate in the night and use of compass to find directions.
The competition will hold in Idofian, 50 kilometres from Ilorin and is expected to instil discipline and promote team work in the army.
