Ambali Takes Over as UNILORIN VC

Professor I'shaq Oloyede,Vice Chancellor University of Ilorin Monday after five years tenure officially handed over to the new helmsman, Prof Abdulganiyu Ambali expressed his preparedness for the challenges ahead and to sustain the human and material resources legacies left by his predecessors.

The out gone Vice Chancellor, at a colourful ceremony in the expansive university auditorium said his greatest achievement was that he instilled the legacy of discipline among the staff and the students.

Prof Oloyede who seized the occasion to enumerate his numerous achievements also noted that he did not award any honorary degree over the past five years,"not because qualified people are short of supply but because the degrees have been groosly abused".

"It is in the interest of the respectable people who deserve the awards that we do not award any. If honorary awards are conferred on dishonorable people, it is a mark of honour for dishonourable people to be excused from such charade", He added.

At the handing over ceremony which also coincided with the commencement of the 28th Convocation ceremony, Prof Oloyede in his last assignment before handing over said that 5,556 undergraduates, 1069 higher degree and postgraduate Diploma were graduated by University of Ilorin(UNILORIN) for 2011/2012 session.

He also pointed out that the university had 37 first class graduates while 988 had second class upper division 2,746 second class lower lower division, 1,234 third class, 310 pass, 61 Diploma and 180 MB,BS.

He said at the post graduate level the university produced 1069 graduands out of which 83 are PHD ,562 masters 23 MPH ,246 MBA/MPA/MILR/MIS/MGIS and155 Diploma /Certificate .

He said one remarkable feature is that apart from producing the highest number of first class graduate so far the university has also produced the highest number of PHD degrees so far during the session under review.

The university don who mentioned Nigerian factor as one of the challenges he encountered during his tenure advised the new vice chancellor to live above the syndrome.

Prof Oloyede described his successor as a robust scholar of international standard, who is well respected all over the world among his professional colleagues.

He also said that by the antecedents of his successor, "he is a man that is duly qualified to take the university of ilorin higher. A cosmopolitan personality with a vast and varied academic background, I believe the council did not err in appointing him to succeed me".

He appealed to the members of the university community and the entire public to support and cooperate with him, stressing that,"yesterday it was Oloyede; today it is Ambali; tomorrow, it will be someone else, anyone of us".
