Date: 2020-06-21

The National Human Right Commission (NHRC) in collaboration with the Kwara State Government have expressed readiness to wage war against rape and women molestation in the state.

This development is coming on the spate of rape cases, violent against women, among others, in Nigeria.

The State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Salman Jawondo, says the state government is ready to work with the commission in order to stern the tide.

Jawondo who played host to the state branch of NHRC expressed concern that the ugly trend has been threatening the peace of the society, saying "minors are the most vulnerable."

According to him, "some people indulge in the crime not for sexual satisfaction but for ritual purposes, adding that the hand of law must catch up with them."

The Attorney General, also warned ladies who are in their prime age to desist from wearing provocative dresses that could attract unnecessary attentions.

According to him, there are cases of women raping men and proper attention should be given to such development too.

"The case is on the increase especially at this time, those who indulge in it with children, I want to believe is not for sexual satisfaction but for rituals. What of women who rape men, we need to be concerned about that too," he said.

In the same vein, the State Commissioner for Communications, Alhaji Muritala pledged government's support for the commission.

The coordinator of the commission in the state, Barrister Jumoke Olaoye urged women to always speak up whenever they are being sexually molested, saying "the commission will continue to say no to rape and women violence."

"The NHRC was established by National Assembly some years back but came into function in 2012 in Kwara State. We are backed up by law to investigate, summon, visit certain places like prisons. We also have the special function of defending the voiceless especially women who are being sexual harassed on the society," she stated.

According to her, the commission embarked on a week long protest against rape of the under-aged girl child, violence against women, among others, lamenting that the scourge is on the increase and they are saying no to rape.
